How many of us struggle with connecting the ends of our binding in a smooth and clean way? Probably more than would like to admit. Me personally, I hate binding and hand binding especially. Maybe hate is too strong of a word, but it is my least favorite part about making a quilt. In fact, I have been guilty of allowing my quilts to sit for months, quilted and ready to be bound and just not taking that short hour to finish it up.
I have never really been satisfied with how I have connected the beginning and ending of my binding. I used to fold on the diagonal and overlap. But it was too thick and would have this bulbous look.
I was so glad one day when one of my customers sent me the link to this video. I want to share it with you.
Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to apply. All you have to remember is to overlap your strips the same measurement of how wide you cut your binding. For example, you cut your binding 2.25″, overlap the ends 2.25″, remove the excess. Cross the ends as you would join the strips, perpendicularly and sew on the diagonal. Time the extra and give a slight tug. The binding slides right into place at the perfect amount to finish the last few inches. You will never know where you began your binding again. It is such a smooth finish.
Enjoy!
